Are you ready to make your creative work

What are you are doing November 10th & 11th?

Don’t know?

I do!

I’ll be watching April’s class while it is taking place LIVE in San Francisco at the CreativeLive studio.

Why?

  • Because April rocks! I first “met” April on a post over at etsy, talking about marketing for creatives.
I then clicked to her blog Blacksburg Belle, out of curiosity, and immediately fell in love.
Her content, her photos, her presentations…it made me want a blog like that myself!
For a creative junkie like me, who has big problems about marketing myself and my products,
April’s blog held the answers to many of my doubts.
    Oh, and did I mention?
    Her smile is contagious 🙂

  • I had been toying with the idea of making clothes patterns
and selling the digital copies for quite awhile now.
I know how to make clothes patterns on paper
but was hesitant about how to turn them into digital copies
(my patterns are BIG!) because of any tech issues
that either I could encounter AND
the potential future client may run into while downloading.
April is sure to cover trouble-shooting! (Right, April? 😉

  • Marketing, marketing, marketing!
(That may be the MAIN reason I haven’t created digital patterns already….)
I can never seem to learn enough about this topic
as my #1 issue is sales.
I am imagining that April will touch on this also.

  • I watched April’s class on CreativeLive a few months ago on how to
“Build a Successful Creative Blog”.  It was the first CreativeLive class
I had watched and it did not disappoint!
HERE is the link to that one.
From what I’ve seen already as April as a qualified teacher,
I know that this class will just as good, if not better!

Here’s a bit about what I’d love to sell:

clothes and accessories sewing patterns.

There are already so many out there on the internet

that I’d like to see how I could stand out from the crowd somehow.

As I develop my confidence on both my marketing and digital skills,
perhaps I could also develop an e-course on pattern-making and sewing tips.

Here’s just a tiny peek into what I’ve made in the past
(everything from the initial sketch, to the pattern, cutting, sewing, styling, and selling).

Wedding dresses, skirts, jackets, dresses, pants, shorts…..

If you can dream of your favorite outfit, I can make the pattern!

Any goddesses in the house?

Ever notice how you buy a red car and you then see that EVERYONE has a red car?

Or you are pregnant and all of a sudden every other woman you see has a belly bump?

After I decided to use the word GODDESS as part of my internet identity, I started to notice Goddesses all around me.

How could I resist the temptation to click/write/meet/connect to other virtual Goddesses?

I ran into the word Goddess on Kickstarter  quite by chance recently.

Here’s what it was:

The Goddess Project

It turned out to be two women traveling the US,  filming and interviewing women  from all walks of life.

In their words, The Goddess Project is a “feature-length documentary made by two girls who traveled 10,000 miles across America,
interviewing incredible everyday women about their paths to self-discovery.”

There was no question about donating to that project! Holli and Sara were fortunate to get their idea fully funded.

Because of my teeny donation, here’s what I got in the mail from them the other day:

Hello, Malala!

WE ARE WOMEN.

As female citizens of this world, the recent news about

Malala Yousafzai  winning the Nobel Peace prize,

together with Kailash Satyarthi,  a children’s rights  activist from  India,

is absolutely fantastic!

Don’t you think so?

I think that Malala’s decisions will affect women and girls (and all of humanity) for generations to come.

One of the big problems with education is that precisely the people who need it the most, are often the ones who deeply oppose it.

Yet the people who insist that something is “good for you” can often come across as patronizing and so their advice is ignored.

That is why I think Malala will be able to accomplish so much.

She a is a girl.

She is young.

And she is Pakistani.

She won’t have to preach.

She has first hand knowledge of the the value of education.

What better advocate for universal female education could we ask for?!

Her voice may be able to ring more loudly and clearly than if she were older, a male, and from a richer (“more civilized”) nation.

I take it for granted that education is a good thing for everyone. Not everyone in this world has the same opinion.

Malala is an advocate for education for all girls, yet not all people (the Taliban, for example) want what she is fighting for.

There can be a fine line between your desire to help others in a way that you believe is good & true, and what the people who are receiving your help think about the whole business.

The following is a true story.

Some years back, an acquaintance of mine sold all her possessions and decided to move to the jungles of Brazil.

She was enjoying her new care-free lifestyle, yet noticed that many of the children around her did not go to school.

This worried her. She was convinced that a basic education should be a priority for all these kids.

So she decided to tackle the problem herself. She started by going to visit the local families.

And that was when she first hit up against a brick wall.

The families did not want their children to go to school. The only way to make ends meet was to have the children go to work everyday.

Who had time for something as lofty as school?

She didn’t want to give up so easily so she decided to approach the problem step by step.

Step one:

She had to convince the families that education was a good thing in the long run.

But how do you convince someone who is starving today that they will have more food on their table in the uncertain future if only their kids could learn how to read and write?

Step two:

After some of the families agreed about the importance of education, there was the problem of getting the kids enrolled.

In order to be enrolled, a child first needed to present a birth certificate.

Easy peasy, you’d think, right? Well, no, not really. When parents are illiterate, what use to them is a piece of paper with the names and birth dates of their children?

So next came the long ordeals of obtaining birth certificates. What a thrill! Hurray! Papers and questionnaires to full, IDs to be shown!

Anybody who has applied for a passport, visa, or even a driver’s licence, knows the fun and joy involved here.

(Ok, so maybe this depends on which country you live in…but you get the point.)

Getting a birth certificate in Brazil involved all that thrill plus driving the mother, together with the children, to the big city for the day, going to city hall, standing in line, and applying for the proper documents.

Easy enough, right?

No.

It meant that the mother would have to take off work and thus miss that day’s paycheck.

As you can probably guess, it was not easy to get the women to sacrifice a day of work in exchange for a piece of paper with some official stamps on it.

I haven’t spoken to Pilar (the brave Spanish woman who did this) in almost 10 years so I cannot tell you anything else about how successful her venture was/is. In any case,  this is what she told me. She did manage to get some kids successfully into school on a daily basis  and I was duly impressed.

When we grow up in a country where all kids go to school, we take so much for granted about elementary education.

And don’t you love that Malala is a practicing Muslim? I hope that she is able to educate the Western world,  just by being herself, that not all Muslims are automatically bad people!

What do YOU think about Malala? What are your thoughts about mandatory education for all girls and boys, no matter where they live?

I love to read your opinions! Please LEAVE a comment below!!! (You’ll get an A+ if you do:))

What’s the difference between a turkey and a pigeon?

I got this letter in my mailbox the other day:

Dear Indre,

Next month, the Gadhimai Festival will take place at a temple in southern Nepal. The two-day event happens every five years – and it’s the world’s largest sacrifice of animals.
In just weeks, more than 500,000 water buffalo, pigs, goats, chickens, pigeons and even mice will be slaughtered en masse by inexperienced people – tortured, beaten and in some cases, beheaded with all manner of weapons, causing a slow, painful death. The goal: pleasing Gadhimai, the goddess of power.
Humane Society International is working urgently with the Nepalese and Indian governments to reduce the number of animals killed and ultimately, to make the event violence-free, but we need your help.
It’s estimated that more than 70 percent of the animals involved are imported from India. To stem the tide, HSI helped secure requests from India’s Home Ministry to its states to prevent such border crossings during the festival period. We’ve also met with key politicians and mobilized religious leaders to raise public awareness, and we’re seeking intervention from the country’s Supreme Court.
Now, together we need to pressure the Nepalese government as well. Proper enforcement of local quarantine laws will help to reduce the number of animals slaughtered, improve welfare during transport and decrease the chance of spreading diseases. We’ve partnered with the Animal Welfare Network of Nepal – torchbearer of this campaign – and we’re making progress. But we need support from animal advocates around the world to ensure that the authorities cooperate fully.
Thank you for all that you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Andrew Rowan

I was ready to click on “Please take a moment….”
After all, I love dogs, I love cats; heck, I love ALL pets!
My diet has been predominantly vegetarian for many years….yet…….
“Hmmm”, I needed to think this out.
So I started to put my ideas to paper.
Upon finishing, I clicked SEND.
Here’s my response to the President and CEO of the Humane Society International, Andrew Rowan:

Hello,

For the present moment, I am not signing this petition.

Cruelty is one thing, yes, and I certainly do not agree with cruelty.

Yet I do want to ask something:

Aren’t those animals being slaughtered used for food later?

As far as I know about Nepali culture, the answer to this question is “Yes”.

Assuming that all those animals are being used for food,

how does your petition here differ from creating a petition

to ask  meat slaughter factories in the United States, Canada, Argentina, and Australia

to refrain from animal sacrifice?

What makes you think that the Nepali are being more cruel

than what takes place on a daily basis in the meat industry in the first world?

Are some animal killing methods more “humane” than others?

What would happen if people in India and Nepal were to start a massive campaign

against the way human beings in the US consume turkeys during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter?

Should they send a letter to the President of the United States

so that Americans would no longer eat turkey during Thanksgiving?

How come you are protesting about half a million animals in Nepal when

174 TIMES as many animals are slaughtered

for Americans during their respective holidays????????

Consider these facts:
46 million turkeys were consumed on Thanksgiving,
22 million on Christmas,
and 19 million turkeys on Easter in 2011 in the United States.
Total number of turkeys slaughtered for the holidays: 87 million turkeys.

I am a vegetarian yet I am not going to protest
to all the people in this world who do choose to eat meat.

Is that what you are trying to do?

Thank you for all that you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Indre

**********Dear reader, what do YOU think???*********

And that’s when I saw it.

“When you ASSUME, you make an ASS out of U and ME.”

It was September.

I just recently enrolled into fashion design school in, of all places, one of the fashion meccas of the world: Milan, Italy. Was I excited?  Wouldn’t YOU be???

I had already spent a few weeks in Milan during the past summer, when I had gone to check out the school and the city.  In my 24-year-old eyes, I was a savvy traveler, having ventured around Europe by myself off and on, during the past five years. I knew by experience that finding a cheap hostel, without previous bookings, was incredibly easy. You just showed up at the door. A room was always available.

I assumed that it was always that easy.

When I arrived in Milan in September of 1985, suitcase in hand, I went back to the same hostel I had stayed at a month previously. “Sorry, all booked.”, the owner told me. I thought nothing of it. After all, Milan was a big city and there were plenty of hostels around.

There was another one down the street. “Sorry, all booked”, was the answer when I inquired about a room. Off to a third hostel, this time a few blocks away. Same answer. Hmm, this was getting to be not as nice & easy as I assumed. Did I mention? About my suitcase? I was dragging around an elephant-sized piece of baggage with me. I was too much of a snob to carry a back-pack, oh no, not me, I was way too cool to be wearing a back-pack like all those other wide-eyed naive Americans with their Eurail passes in hand. Keep in mind, I was a fashion design student, I loved clothes, and wouldn’t be caught dead trucking around a European city in comfy jeans, a plain T-shirt, and scufed up hiking boots. You can bet that I had as many as my funky outfits that I could stuff into that wheel-less suitcase of mine.

So, with my faithful yet heavy-as-a-ton-of-hippos suitcase in hand, I struggled my way to the 4th hostel. Same answer. The fifth one. C’mon on, Indre, five is your lucky number, isn’t it? Uh-oh. Not this time. This was getting to be a bit frustrating, not to mention extremely annoying.

Why was everything booked? Turns out that precisely the week of my arrival, there were several very important conventions taking place in town. Pre-Google days, there was no way I would have even known about all those conventions before arriving. Unless, of course, I had gone to a travel agency. But no, young 20-somethings didn’t go to travel agencies back then. “Europe on $10-a-day” were our bibles back then, not to be substituted by advice from travel agencies. OK, I told myself, “If there aren’t any cheap hostels with rooms, why not try my luck at an expensive hotel?” I figured that I’d have to really splurge and venture to a one-star hotel. No luck. Two stars. Three stars. Four stars. No. No. And no.

Did this mean I going to sleep out on the street that night??? I was really ready to just sit down and cry. And that’s when I spotted it.

A tiny little hotel, across the street from the train tracks, on the outskirts of town. Kind of scruffy on the outside, dark and dingy on the inside. Did I care? I didn’t even notice. I repeated my same old question. Only that this time, the answer was YES! I couldn’t believe my luck!

I booked 2 nights right there on the spot. I must have been smiling from ear to ear as I gladly handed over my passport and several 1000-lira notes (today’s equivalent of maybe $5).  I felt like crying..again…but this time in relief! Shown to my room, I settled in for the night after the exhausting hotel hunt. I woke up refreshed the next morning, vaguely remembering hearing strange moaning and groaning (or was I just dreaming?) through the paper thin walls during the night. I was much more excited about my prospects of attending my first day at fashion design school, rather  than reminisce about the trails and tribulations of my previous 24 hours.

As I went to hand in my room key for safe-keeping to the guy behind the desk, he promptly looked me up and down with a twinkle in his eye. (For your information, guys always eyed you on the street in Italy, practically undressing you with their stares. Not a comfortable feeling but, heck, I was trying to get used to it. The term “politically correct” hadn’t yet been invented. The vague notion of feminism got confused with the word feminine which basically involved wearing eyeliner à la sex pot Sofia Loren, while cooking oodles of spaghetti for your numerous family members. I was making terms with accepting such behavior as a part of daily life in otherwise amazing Italy.)

“What are you doing in Milan? Why are you alone? “, this dark haired yet decidedly sleazy hotel employee was inquiring, looking rather concerned for my well being. Back in those days, Italian women did not go out alone, much less did they travel alone. I was actually used to being asked in Italy why I wasn’t traveling with my mom & dad (no kidding!). I proudly told him I was a student. “Ah, OK, I see”, he muttered, looking vaguely amused, and let me go on my way, as I was very excited to get to school on time.

After a wonderful day trying my skills as a future famous fashion designer, I got back to my dingy hotel in the early evening and retired for the night, pretty much the same as the previous night. I woke up, vaguely remembered hearing, yet again, all sorts of strange noises coming form the room next door . “Italians really can be loud people”,  I thought to myself.

I was going to check out of the hotel that morning, as I already had the fortune to find a small apartment,  sharing with three Italian students, Giovanna, Sabrina, and Lucia. Not until I was working my way slowly through the hotel exit (don’t forget, I was still dragging that damn suitcase of mine ), that I finally noticed what I had previously overlooked during the exhausting yet utterly exhilarating past two days.

There they were. As plain as that bright sunny autumn morning. Just across the street from the hotel. Several decidedly voluptuous women, tightly clad in mini dresses with  cigarettes dangling from their bright red lips, were shooting furtive glances through their make-up-caked eyes, out onto the street as the traffic whizzed by. I turned around for one last farewell look at the hotel. And that’s when I saw it: a red light bulb hanging above the hotel’s front door.

No wonder the guy at the desk was asking me all those questions!

The quote on the very top is great but this story is just to always, always, always, keep in mind the following:

DON’T make assumptions!

(Last, but definitely not least, here is a BIG thank you to my new internet friend, Judy Yaron with her blog post WORKING GIRLS  for the mega inspiration!)

Birds of Paradise

Birds of Paradise

Click on the words above for a window into a magical world.

This video enchanted me so much that I just had to share.

I sent it to my brother over the week-end.

When we were kids, (pre-home computer days), we’d call him a walking encyclopedia. Nowadays, even with wikipedia at everyone’s fingertips, my favorite Mr. Smarty Pants brother still seems to know everything about anything (even without having to resort to google, like most of us mortals).

Here’s what he wrote to me after watching the video:

“I don’t know if you’d heard this, but the current favorite evolutionary theory is that it is so easy to survive there [New Guinea], to get food, that the birds can afford to put all of their time and energy into fashion.  The idea is that if you are spending all of your time trying to survive, you won’t have energy left to look good, and so that is not a selected trait. “

Did he just say, “…time and energy go into fashion.”??

As a life-long lover of fashion, design, and beauty, this made me giggle with delight 🙂

Because of the marches all over the world yesterday to protect climate change, it is good to see nature documentaries like the one above to remind ourselves of the wonderful creatures that inhabit our earth.

We humans have already provoked the extinction of countless species, isn’t it time we did something about it?

Who made your clothes?

Fall doesn’t arrive officially until September 23rd.

Denim Wrap Top

Stores are urging you to buy lots and lots of new clothes with the change of seasons.

This video here was made almost a year ago. You may or may not have seen it.

It is only 2:44 minutes long.

Watch below:

Have you ever  thought about who  made your clothes?

Do you like to buy lots of clothes, buying cheaply,
and replacing the clothes every few months?

Or do you prefer to buy something only occasionally, looking for quality,
spending more knowing that it will last a long time?

In other words,

are you a

QUANTITY shopper?
-or-
QUALITY shopper?

Or something in-between?

(I am in-between but would prefer to be a quality-only shopper.
I admit, sometimes it is hard to resist a cute Tshirt for $5!)
The video is just to have us think about the impact of our decisions.

I am curious to hear what you have to say.
Please leave your thoughts  below!

Who really made your clothes?

I did not make this video (although I wish I had!)
It is called HANDPRINT,  from Director Mary Nighy and Producers White Lodge.
It premiered at London Fashion Week in the fall of 2013.  The film aims to raise awareness of the challenges faced by garment workers and jewelry producers around the world.

But you don’t WANT to feel sad.

School has started.

Summer was so sweet .

And now it’s gone.

The workload is exploding.

The clouds are rolling in and you feel the panic coming on.

clouds in mojacar

The clouds will turn into thunder, and lightning, and stormy weather before you know it.

And that gets you down.

So come. Embrace your sadness. Don’t push it aside.

Seriously.

But, damn, you HATE that dark feeling, like a tangled rope inside your chest and a lumpy tennis ball in your throat.

What DO you do, when all you really feel like doing is
curling up with Kleenex and Netflix,
with grey sweats on (the kinda not-so-clean ones you meant to wash 10 days ago),
bed-head hair (the real kind, not the $75 blowout  special),
and a bowl (uh, make that a pint) of Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Therapy???

++++++++++++++++++

Go to a quiet room. Seriously.

(Even popping into the bathroom for 5 minutes could do the trick if you live in a noisy house.)

Sit comfortably. (No, it doesn’t have to be on the floor with legs impossibly crossed. It could be on the toilet seat–preferably with the lid down.)

Close your eyes.

Take a deep breathe in through your nose.

Open your mouth. Breathe out with a sigh.

Now envision your anger, your sadness as a teeny, tiny, helpless baby.

The baby is all alone.

In a crib.

In a room.

You hear her:

” WAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!”

You jump up, dash madly to her room,

go to the side of her crib,

and pick her up lovingly in your arms.

You notice a wooden antique rocking chair in the corner of the room. The seat has the cushiest of cushions decorated with purple crushed velvet.

You sink down into the cushion on the rocking chair with the crying baby in your arms.

You being to rock.

You  whisper into Baby’s ear,

“Honey dearest. I’m here. It’s OK. You’re in my arms now. It’s OK. It’s OK. It’s all going to be OK. ”

But Baby keeps crying.

And screaming.

And kicking forcefully at your arms.

You let her. You allow her to kick and scream.  You remain peaceful and just observe as Baby has a tantrum.

You continue whispering, “ It’s OK, I’m here. Really, it’s OK. I love you, my baby, it’s OK. ”

You continue rocking her in your arms.

After what seems like eons, her crying subsides.

And finally stops.

Baby falls asleep out of sheer exhaustion.

You hear her steady breathing and feel her heavy little body in your arms.

Standing up, you carry her to her crib and lay her down gingerly.

But she won’t wake up now. You know.

You look down at her peaceful face one last time and say,

“My honey baby, you’re OK now. It’s all OK. Sleep. I love you.”

You go out of the room.

(No need to tip-toe, as Baby is profoundly asleep).

And shut the door behind you.

You can still feel the warmth in your chest where Baby was in your arms just  a few moments ago.

**********

Take a deep breath. In through your nose.

Open your mouth.

Let go with a sigh.

Open your eyes.

And smile!

Summary:

What we are doing here is acknowledging the sadness within.
Yes, it is here. And it is real.
Please try not to push the sadness away. It may overwhelm you, transform itself into an ache, a pain, a lump.
Acknowledge that sadness, that anger within you.

That sadness is the baby in this story. Pick her up, be present with her for a little while, soothe her. And finally, PUT HER AWAY.

Be still with your sadness, but remember, always remember:

She is just a helpless BABY.

She does NOT rule you. She may want to rule you.

But don’t let her.

You may feel the temptation to feed her.

But don’t.

Yes, she’s special.
But she doesn’t need to be fed.

YOU are the supreme mommy-in-charge.

YOU are the goddess.

Do not hand over your power to the mere infant.

She lives within you and when you are happy, she’s fast asleep.

Yet when she wakes up, crying and kicking and making a fuss,  don’t ignore her.  Recognize her. Allow her to be present. Hug her. Soothe her.

Be with her for a moment.

But just a moment.

Just don’t let her rule your world.

4 things you can do NOW to stop stressing

Do you ever stress?

Or should I ask: “Who DOESN’T stress?”

You’ve been told to relax, chill out, meditate, eat healthy, exercise, yada, yada, yada…
but all that advice is just too abstract.

So what do you do? You ignore it. And then you stress about stressing !

The most powerful way to reduce stress is to go out into nature.

*Here are 4 proven tips to do FOR ONLY 1 MINUTE at a time (really!) to drastically reduce stress:

  1. *yawn* Chances are that just reading this word will make you yawn. Yawn once and the next 10-20 will follow. You will feel energized afterwards. No kidding! The difficult part will be to stop yawning 🙂

  2. Run in place. Start slowly. Then rev up. Run (jog, hop, hey, why not dance?!) for 60 seconds. Go on, pretend you’re a little kid again! Your body will thank you for it.

  3. Close your eyes. Roll your head around  in a full circle S-L-O-W-L-Y in one direction. Gently. You don’t want to pull any neck muscles by accident! Switch directions and do the full circle going the other way.

  4. Pet your own hand. Sounds funny? Yeah, it may but this is soothing and relaxing. Caress your hand and forearm like it was your favorite pet. Switch hands. Repeat. Nice, huh?

Are YOU going to try any of these tiny-yet-powerful exercises???

Let us know in the comments BELOW

(Or you are one of those lucky people who don’t stress?  Let us know how you perform such miracles!)

*These tips are taken from Words Can Change Your Brain by Mark Robert Waldman and Andrew Newberg.
Waldman had his MBA students practice these simple relaxation exercises for 10 days in a row.
He claims that their stress levels reduced over the course of nine months.

Click here to go the homepage & sign up.
Make sure to scroll down to see the box where to enter your name and email!

If you are already receiving  letters from me, you don’t have to do anything.
You are already entered to win.

About the clutch:

I made it.
What inspired me was the fabric.
I had a small remnant of a brocade fabric
that I bought from a small fabric manufacturer in France a few years ago.
Despite being made in France, the fabric made me feel like I was in Kyoto just looking at it!

I am in love with traditional Japanese culture.
I’ve never been to Japan and I don’t even know any Japanese people.
Yet their sense of design enchants me.

Kimonos,  ikebana (art of flower arrangement), sushi, zen gardens…

The words that immediately jump to mind when I think of Japanese design are:

Simplicity.
Harmony.
Balance.
Perfection.

This clutch isn’t a masterpiece of Japanese design (after all, I am not Japanese!) but it is elegant and timeless.

Here you can see the front part of the clutch and the brocade fabric.

I realize that evening bags are often just worn once and then stashed away in closets and forgotten. What a pity that would be if that happened to this bag. 🙁

So it occurred to me that when you travel, this bag could be the ideal place to store your undies & socks so they wouldn’t get all jumbled in your suitcase. And you’d have that evening bag ready, just in case you got invited out to that chic little bistro on the Seine…..
You just never know!

Do you like this bag?
Did you like the story behind it?

CHIME FOR CHANGE

Great news! Macy’s (CHIME FOR CHANGE) just donated $14,584.00 to the non-for-profit org APRAMP that helps victims of human trafficking. Most victims are young girls and women, from 14 to 25 years old.
WeavingAFuture APRAMP helps the women reintegrate into society, access the labor market, and become self-reliant.
APRAMP had been trying to raise $14,880 via catapult.org
to buy sewing machines and teach the women weaving skills.
The deadline for raising this money was fast approaching and they were still more than $14.500 short……. when a miracle happened TODAY!
Macy’s (CHIME FOR CHANGE) stepped up to donate the difference!!!
The reason I am personally excited is because I have been in contact with APRAMP and am planning a major sewing project with  them.
I am planning something beautiful to offer you here at HelloMyGoddess!
It is still a secret. YOU WILL KNOW  in due time! 🙂
Reading about bombs in the Middle East, passenger airplanes being shot down, too many innocent people being killed….it makes one start to lose hope in humanity…
Then, all of a sudden, you read news like this and you KNOW there is still hope to make the world a more beautiful place!
THANK YOU Macy’s & CLIMATE for CHANGE !!!!!!!

BEACH = sea shells

mermaid seashell spoonsIt’s July!

Off to the beach!

YAAAAY!!  I LOVE the beach.

Actually, I am lucky because I do not have to wait until July to go to the beach.  I merely have to put on my shoes or sandals, and in  10 minutes flat (walking, not by car!) I am on the shores of the Mediterranean.

I never sunbathe. Boooooooooring!

Instead, I swim. Or  I walk. Occasionally I  run.

What I always do, no matter what,  is pick up the little treasures I see at my feet:
seashells, pebbles, stones, twigs, sea urchin shells, sea glass……….

DSCF3749ok

Sometimes I  carry the little jewels in my hand for awhile, and then end up throwing  them  back into the sea.

Other times I cannot resist the temptation of taking the treasure home.
The big ones are doorstops and paperweights, the tiny ones get made  into jewelry or mini shelf art pieces that you can get here.

IV-ZENST07_01

IV-ZENST07_04

I ran across an idea in Sweet Paul  magazine* about converting seashells = spoons.
Oh,  I HAD to try that!

Here’s a handful of shells that I picked especially for the project:

DSCF3752ok

I won’t give you instructions how to make these spoons.

If you are artsy fartsy, like me, you can figure out it out by just looking at the photos.

If you are not a confident DIY-er, then here’s what you need:

***an assortment of seashells

***different thicknesses of wire (you can get some at the hardware store or at a craft shop)

***pliers (to help bend the thicker wires. any old pair will do)

***a hammer & nail (to punch a hole in the shell, you place the nail in inner part of the shell. With one quick blow, you’ll make a hole. Careful for your fingers! Be forewarned that some shells will break this way 🙁 Be sure to have lots of extras!)

It was a bit fiddly to make the first one. I was ready to give up.
I ventured to make another a week later.  That’s when I got  hooked and made 4 in one go.

So now I have 5 of these sweet mermaid spoons.

Where to use them?

In the salt jar? hmmm, maybe not. I already have a cute wooden spoon there.

In the sugar bowl? YES! Good idea!

My mom made this sugar bowl  eons years ago.
(OK , I know, I know. White sugar is a “no-no” nowadays but I have the stuff around the house for a few of my friends who need the so-called-white-poison in their coffee or tea).

DSCF3775ok

Anyone for some blackberry jelly &  freshly baked whole wheat bread & a cup of tea??? mmmmmm

DSCF3779okkkkkkkkk

This isn’t a story. So it doesn’t need an ending.
But just in case here are the 3 morals:

·Observe the tiny things in life. (seashells, smiles,  butterflies, free hugs)

·Nothing is perfect. Yet everything is perfect in it’s imperfection. (each seashell is uneven in shape, size and color. like my teeth. like my body. like my new website. )

·Enjoy the process. Savor the journey. Sure, the outcome is  important but if you don’t pay attention to the ride, you’re missing out. (making the seashell spoons was just as fun as seeing the end result. life rushes past too quickly. take each day one at a time. and don’t forget to smell the flowers. you don’t know if they’ll be around tomorrow.)

*Original seashell spoon idea seen on http://www.sweetpaulmag.com/crafts/seashell-spoons

Come visit me in Spain!

2013-06-13 21.25.28ok

Happy Birthday, US of A !

For those of my American friends reading this, I hope you are enjoying these 3 days of outdoor fun.

After indulging in

grilled zucchini + secret spicy sauce,

green onion + red skinned potato salad,

special brew beers,

and those crazy red-white-blue jello-O margarita shots,

maybe you’re wishing that this non-work weekend could last forever.

Maybe not.

Maybe you suffer from  an acute  case of of wanderlustitis

and wish that your whole life were a vacation.

Come visit me in Spain!

I’m not kidding!

I’ve made several good friends through  the internet. And TWO of them actually ventured beyond their comfort zone and made it out to my teeny weeny town in the middle of nowhere in southeast Spain.

(Caralee & Laura Z, here’s a winking at you!)

We had the best time, going for long walks by the sea and indulging in the best hot chili + rich dark chocolate ice cream that money can buy (around here, anyway). If you don’t believe me, ask them 😉

Since it might be awhile since you can make it all the way to my little corner of the world, I’ve decided to invite you into my studio.

OK, I’m sure you’d just prefer the beach but since you are my guest, you’ll have to put up with me while I show you some of the tiny things that have meaning in my daily life.

DSCF3732ok (455x500)

A little cabinet that I found abandoned out on the street in Madrid eons ago.

It was a boring brown so I painted it a snazzy black +white + red.

A couple of years ago I white-washed it,  adding grungy swirls.

DSCF3731 (500x344)

A closer look at what I keep on top of it:

+A triptych of mini art, entitled “Beauty & the Beast” , painted by my best friend Doreen.

+A heart shaped rock I found on the beach (no kidding!) that I decided to paint red. I use it as a paperweight.

+Another beach stone, this one painted with an all-seeing eye by my son when he was 8? 10?

+A trade-fair bowl I bought some years back. I loved the story behind it: Made by Nepalese women, using traditional basket-weaving techniques but made out of candy wrappers!

DSCF3734ok (416x500)

I decided to take off the boring old door knob and replaced it with a stone.

(I live next to nature: stones of all shapes and sizes are plentiful around here).

I drilled a hole in it & painted it red. And for the final touch, I added a red satin cord with beads as the pull so I could open it.

DSCF3735ok (500x375)

Inside you can see the snazzy way I had painted in  back in the ’80’s when I first found this.

My design  inspiration + ideas are stored here.

Nice windows with lots of sunshine. Yeah, I know!

I am lucky!

These are all snippets of ideas that are whizzing around my brain.

I know I am not the only one thinking this way.

I heard YOU say them on the internet.

You have inspired me!

I am a creator. I love to make clothes. I love to make jewelry.

Yet with so much “stuff” out there already, much of it just polluting our lovely planet, I felt a deep discontent about adding more daily junk to our overstuffed lives.

And here is how you have inspired me:

I’ve gone treasure-hunting

we are adding meaning to our lives.

summer solstice weekend

DSCF3716ok

Hello Summer!

Here are a few rays of early morning light coming into my home.

It’s a gorgeous weekend. At least where I live in southern Spain.

I hope you are outside and able to enjoy all these hours of sunshine! Well, OK, not if you live in the southern hemisphere, in which case, greetings with your winter solstice!

What are YOUR plans for this new season?

Discover the reason YOU are a goddess

Why exactly “Hello My Goddess” ?

A very long time ago, in a place far from here,

a little viking princess fell in love with her knight in shining armor.

The princess did 53 cartwheels out of sheer excitement

when the wedding was announced.

Ten years was a long time to be boy-knight-friend & girl-princess-friend.

The couple decided it was about time to populate the world

with miniature versions of themselves.

Marriage was logically the next step in their fairy tale world.

At long last, that special aisle-walking day came…….

………..and went.

The little viking princess bride moved in with her striking shiny knight and they lived happily ever.

Never.

Mr. Knight yelled and yelled and yelled.

Mrs. Princess cried and cried and cried.

A baby was born. A prince!

The baby prince didn’t yell.

But, boy, did he cry!

And so, the princess cried along with him.

Baby # 2 came along. A little princess!

And so the original princess lost her place of honor

and was relegated to the role of chimney sweeper. And diaper changer.

And 3 a.m. night-shift nurse. And music-class-gymnastics-team-after-school-activities-chauffeur.

And cleaning lady. And smelly socks washer…..

[You get the picture.]

The chimney-sweeper-former-princess was overwhelmed.

Two precious babies and oh my, how they cried!

She hugged them daily and noticed that it helped her own crying go away.

Yet with all that embracing, one big question obsessed her daily:

“Why did Mr. Knight yell at me so much? ”

Is it something I SAID? ”, she wondered.

So she stopped talking.

After all, he DID tell her that she said stupid things.

Is it the way I laugh? ”, she wondered.

After all, he DID say that she had an obnoxious laugh.

So she stopped laughing.

Is it the way I dress? ” she wondered.

After all, he DID say that those shoes didn’t match that dress and how ever did he expect him to go out with her if she was going to wear that.

So she stopped dressing.

(NO, she did NOT go naked! Mr. Knight often called her “fat ass” and “cow”, interspersed with “clumsy” and “klutz”. So Mrs. Chimney-Sweeper-No-Longer-Princess tried to dress in a way that would play down her adorable bubble butt. )

Mrs. Kitchen-Mopper-No-Longer-Princess came to the conclusion that she was, oh, so weak because she didn’t know how to deal with so much yelling.

After all, Mr. Shining Armor DID constantly say,

“You are too sensitive!
The problem is that you need to hear things delivered on a silver platter! Well, have I got news for you. You are just a spoiled brat and you don’t even realize it!”

Mrs. No-Longer-Princess fell into a depression.
That lasted for quite some time.

But as with all fairy tales, this one has a happy ending.

One fine day, the ex-princess WOKE UP.

“A-HA! I’ve found it!
Here is the answer to the question that has been obsessing me all these years!”

It was right there in front of her.

Staring her squarely from the computer screen:

“You’ve always had the power.

It’s just that you gave it away.”

HUH? Was that REALLY it?

Yep. That was it.

*******

Power Realization # 1:

“It’s not ME! It’s HIM! HE is the one with the problems. He thinks that he can blame me for everything that is wrong in his world.”

Power Realization # 2:

“I am NOT weak!
Hell, no, I am one of the strongest woman alive to have tolerated so may years of anger!”

Power Realization # 3:

“I CAN make it on my own!
At the very least, I will NOT end up begging in the gutter as Mr. Soon-To-Be-Ex-Knight has often threatened me!”

Power Realization # 4:

“I AM a goddess!
I’ve been strong, and beautiful, and powerful all along! It’s just that those qualities were buried so deep that I didn’t even know it.”

Power Realization # 5:

“Not only am I a goddess
but ALL women are goddesses!”

Power Realization # 6:

“Many Goddesses-In-Hiding do not know their true power.
I know how horrible this feels.
I really want to help them someday!”

Power Realization # 7:

“Yes! I CAN do it!!!”

And so, the idea of Goddess was born.

I’m starting this new e-commerce adventure

because I want to help all the goddesses out there:

By employing down-on-their-luck goddesses.

By donating to organizations that help goddesses.

By selling artisan goddesses’ lovely creations.

I want to help ALL these lovely goddesses make a living

while infusing YOUR life with meaningful and beautiful objects.

And, in case you have any doubts, yes, that little viking princess was me.

In my new life, I blab A LOT!

And I laugh A LOT!

And I dress any old darn way I feel like it!

And I rarely dust the house, nor mop the floor anymore……..

Too many other beautiful things to do!

Why are YOU a goddess???

Just because.

YOU ARE.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Why the “my” in Hello My Goddess?

Have you ever noticed that when you really love someone you address them with the possessive word “my”?

Who hasn’t ever uttered words like these while talking to a loved one:

“How is my cut little doggy-woggy today? Want to go out for a walk?”

Why the “hello” in Hello My Goddess?

“Hello” is a symbol of recognition. I acknowledge your presence.

 Everyone needs to be acknowledged.

Everyone needs love.

How did you feel when your dream came true?

Hello my goddess!

I decided it was about time I told you the real reason why I start my letters with “Hello my goddess!” yet as I am writing this I am surrounded by pins and needles and cutting shears and bits of linen…

DSCF3724

…………so the last thing on my mind right now is to recount the saga of why I decided to name my new shop Hello My Goddess.

You see, the day after tomorrow I present my summer collection of linen clothes in a fashion show. YIKES! Did I say I was nervous? Well, I wasn’t…. yesterday. Today…oh, you better believe it, I AM!

Gosh, I am still in the process of sewing oodles and oodles of tiny little triangular bits of linen onto a sweet little bustier top.

DSCF3721

DSCF3720ok

Let’s pray  it turns out OK as it’ll be part of the grand finale when the bride comes bustling down the runway!

Just when she is out there in all her crowning glory, all twirling about in a majestic linen cape and this (hopefully!) incredible bustier,  the announcer will call out my name so that I go out and wave to the public.

“Hello My Goddess!”,  I’ll shout down to the on-lookers! (No, not really! But I’ll be thinking of you, my dear friends, those of you who  are supporting me from the side-lines and unable to come!)

Ever since I was a prepubescent preteen, I’d been fantasizing about designing for a fashion show……and, whaddya know, only about 4 decades later, this Friday, June 6th, will be the 3rd time I get to fulfill that dream. Yay!

Have you ever wanted to be an actress ….and finally landing the leading role in The Ice Queen?

Have you ever dreamed of playing the lead guitar in a rock & roll band….and just landed 5 gigs to play live in London?

Have you ever dreamed of going to Europe …and all of a sudden you find yourself with a croissant and a café au lait, in a cute little patisserie around the corner from Notre Dame?

Have you ever fantasized about living in a clean house…and all of a sudden your teen volunteers to vacuum the living room? (I wish! Dream on, girl!)

Yes, Dorothy, believe it or not, dreams (sometimes) really DO come true!

How did you feel when your dream came true? I am curious to know!

Everyone else is, too!

Please share your story down below in the comments 😉

And see you next time…

…with the true meaning of Hello My Goddess !

Right now I really gotta hurry on back to my ol’ faithful Singer and get this bridal outfit finished!
